Endless Pondering

Healing With No Accountablity?

A lot of people are saying that the protest is over and let’s start concentrating on healing.

First of all, the protest isn’t over because the Gallaudet Community is still susceptible to reprisals and retaliations. From many sources, including Bob Johnson’s letter, Jordan is well known for his heavy-handed approach on punishing people who spoke out against the corruption and oppression. So, even with the BoT’s promise, I am seeing proof that there are reprisals. For example, look at me. Why am I still getting threats of reprisals from the pro Fernandes group close to Fernandes five days later after BoT declared no reprisals?

We need to be valiant and examine everything that enabled Gallaudet University to be so crippled by the long chains of oppression and paternalism. They have been there long before Jordan and Fernandes came to the picture. However, they, along with others, not only permitted, but also practice the oppression.

How can we heal if there is no accountability of these people who corrupted the system so much for years and incited the protest to formalize?

Fernandes is out of the picture. I hope she will heal and move on.

However, there remain key figures still in the pictures.

What about Jordan?

People are divided about Jordan. Some said let him go and retire quietly. Others demand that he be accountable for his actions.

Jordan contributed significantly to the issues and his current lack of remorse indicates his lack of responsibility in contributing to this whole mess. He personally violated the university policy of staff conduct repeatedly. Should he be held responsible for his actions? Will the next two months as President hurt Gallaudet Community or not?

What about the PR Dept still singing that “Not Deaf Enough” Mantra? Who told them to chant the same song?

What about Paul Kelly who grinned when the PPDs and DPSs assaulted the students at the Brentwood Lane and later screamed at the police when they refused to arrest these students?

What about the allegations of the acting chairperson of BoT bullying the other members into inaction?

What about the new policy restricting the expressions of the students?

How can we heal if we don’t stop, examine the wounds and cleanse them out? If we don’t, these wounds would become covered just like boils, festering underneath, unhealed.

That was what happened after DPN. We won a big victory when we got the first deaf president. But we didn’t clean up the corrupt system.

Hence another protest, Unity for Gallaudet eighteen years later.

We must clean up the corruption within the University so there wouldn’t be any more oppression.

We need to analyze the role of the key players contributing to the extensive corruption who are still within the university system.

This is the only way the university will heal and move forward to a better and more promising future

Any comments?

  2. Sadly, MZ, you are correct. We need someone who is not afraid to clean out the corruption, set up a fair and professional system of governance, and most importantly, show the rest of us the way. Whether we can find someone who has integrity and energy is another matter.

The word “integrity” was unknown at Gallaudet as far back as 1965 and it is high time that it became the Gallaudet beacon.

  3. Dear Honorable Mishka Zena:
I thank you so much in posting updates from Gallaudet Protest. IKJ distributed an email letter to everyone as of November 3, 2003 on my wife’s birthday. Gosh, IKJ exhibits his oppression in his own letter words
without empathy and apology in front of Gallaudet
Protestors, so that the healing never occur in his presence until his departure. Truly, the corruption exists on the campus until the termination of IKJ, Paul Kelly and Mercy Coogan must be done. Our trust never rebuild until the departure of these oppressed leaders.
    IKJ must go.
    PK must go.
    MC must go.
PR Department must close down till the oppression goes away.
The beautiful color of students must get well first in the
healing as well as the deaf students get well from the audism in the healing!
Up Thumb to LaToya Plummer for her superb interview with Kate Couric.

  4. the board didn’t declare “no reprisals.” it declared that people would be punished. It said “The Board of Trustees respects the right of people to express their views in a peaceful manner. However, individuals who violated the law and Gallaudet University’s Code of Conduct will be held accountable.”

  5. I am still waiting for some Staff members returning to work. These people are still at home waiting to hear from the administrative people. Paul Kelly and some people want reprisal. They are saying that the protesters broke the laws. Did not ikj break the law too? did he ask police or campus cops to capture the protesters without the interpreters? did not they hurt the protesters? Can we ask IJK to leave the campus right now instead of December 31st? Can we ask paul Kelly to leave the campus now? Leave the people alone whether they broke the law or not? they did the protest because ikj was not listening. Because of the protesters, we won. Now we have to protect these protesters from ikj. please make big noise and say.. send them back to work next Monday. heal will start this monday. I am still anxiety about reprisal against workers. I will be angry as hell if anyone gets reprisal. i know i am not the only one. it is not over until everyone is back to routine. i am watching….

  6. Diane (Comment #2) is correct in her assessment that Gallaudet University has been corruptible since 1965, the year William C. Stokoe, then Chair of the English Department, published the first Dictionary of American Sign Language that is based on linguistic principles. If one researched how Gallaudet treated Professor Stokoe and threatened his supporters, it’s amazing! Elizabeth serves us well by repeating the letter of Professor Bob Johnson who worked closely with William C. Stokoe in the past. We must continue to fight….
The fact that reprisal would be lukewarm is an insult. The action by the Board of Trustees is inexcusable and unacceptable. Those who supported BOT are brownnosing

  7. Even alumni are being threatened with reprisals like I am and the last time I heard, I have not broken any laws.

It is obvious that the BoT’s decision isn’t being honored by Gallaudet administrators. We must protest against this and make sure there are no reprisals against those who protested or supported the protest and violated no laws

  8. Elizabeth,

How could the admin make a threat against you an alumini with a repisal? What kind of penalty will they do that to you?

  9. The whisleblower policy should be established for gally workers. It helps them to tell their stories in order to expose how the corruption system runs by ikj adminstration.

When the corruption exposes, it weakens the MBI practices of IJK adminstrations and then eventually the Audism and Racism will be collapsed. The main reason for the existence of Audism and Racism in Gally is that it has been funded by the current status quo group with a lot of resources, for example, Paul Kelly, ikj and some BOT friends.

I am not sure if the BOT will be happy to set up the whislteblower policy because I realize that the BOT seems not to be having its own decisions independently.

We need to find a way to remove the fratenizing between BOT and ikj

    any suggestions?

  10. Greg, they sure did with two different forms of reprisals.

  11. Deafprotester, they should open a whistleblower center now, while Gallaudet is in the process of recovering. Unfortunately it is still not safe because of the heavy reprisal atmosphere.

  12. I know the Gally workers are still in FEAR right now. When will they be able to live in DEAF friendly place? kick paul kelly out. i think the workers will start to feel free to talk. Paul Kelly is hearing. He is a non signer. He makes alot of money and power over deaf people on deaf territory. Please please somebody kicks his butt out of the campus. Paul Kelly is an audist for sure. I would love to see his profile. His picture? Where can I see his picture? What does he look like? Mean looking lawyer? I know Paul is having fun to honor ikj s reprisal against the workers who broke no law. no one broke any law. ikj broke many principles. he lies… and still lies… he kept telling us how he was disappointed in us. NO NO.. we have to turn the table… and tell him we are disappointed in him. He is no good. period… 18 years of what????

  14. I think that Dr Bob Davila is an excellent choice for the new Prez of Gally. He is very deaf and very experienced as
a teacher and administrator. We think he could clean up the mess at Gally if he so choose. He has no current or recent connection to Gally-unlike some other deaf canidates
Dont know much abt his background but looks like Mike Moore
makes for a good possible Prez as well or at least deserves
a good chance to be Provost. Dont be surprised if that jackass jordan tries to get jane back in as Provost-in which case things will get ugly again with reprisals etc
We still dont know where that $4 million disappeared to. We need to keep the pressure on abt this. I am willing to bet that with all his experience that Davila would bring in his own people. jordan is currently making noises like he thinks Gally is going to be unified under his (IKF)
“leadership” Imagine the nerve of this jerk.
We think that the best way to make sure that IKJ,JKF,PK and MC are gone from Gally is to keep the pressure on abt the $4 million. Otherwise the gufssa may feel the need to
repeat the protests until these people are indeed gone from
Gally. Does anyone in their right mind think that Gally
can somehow heal with these 4 people still at Gally??
We know that most people think they are indeed gone. However based on jordan’s most recent comments it looks like he wants to stay. This moron thinks he still has
hero status with the board and the deaf community in general. Fact is he is a zero-a wolf in sheeps clothing

  15. Alumna, sorry to report that some trustees came to campus that night,

passed out beer and t-shirts, and high fived the mob. They renounced the

written policy of accountability, promising no consequences other than

“writing papers on good citizenship” and “public service.” If everyone

blocks campus again, perhaps they can be forced to downgrade that to “5

minutes in the time out corner.”

  16. Dealbreakers,

Sorry, you’re wrong. The protesters *saved* Gallaudet from being closed down. They did what was required, and they (we) were morally entitled to do what they did.

    You are *so* wrong!
