Endless Pondering

IKJ and Respect

Hello Slemo,

In theory, I agree with you that President Irving King Jordan deserves some accolades for his contribution in the number of years he gave to Gallaudet University.

However, it is very difficult to remove the bitter aftertaste for what he has done in the last few months.   Spinning the truth (trying to imply that Jane is not deaf enough is an insult to the whole deaf community and he must know that the issues is a lot deeper) is probably the worst thing he could have done and he, being a president should not have done that.   The reputation of Gallaudet University is now at stake as a result of President Jordan’s “careless” otherwise “purposeful” (politics-savvy-wise) action.

Being an alumni living in London, UK, I had to answer many questions about the society in Washington, DC and Gallaudet University and I have to repeat several times that what the media is trying to tell is not completely true.   I am of the opinion that this is the president’s responsibility to put the university in good name.  Quite frankly, I see that this is a very selfish move for President King to spin the truth to the media so Fernie could keep her position as a president-designate and ignoring the whole community.   This is very difficult for me to accept that.

The saying, one reaps what he sows.  It is evident in the chains of events.   President King Jordan asks for that and now he incurs the wrath of the community and he has to face them.

Yes, everyone deserves a second chance and President Jordan has to show us that he can earn our respect back and I believe that this will be a long process.   This is very difficult to forget what he had done in the last few months really.

Efforts to portray King as a “racist” and dig up “dirts” on racism
within his administration are uncalled for. It’s probably not sexy to
defend a man who is on his way out, but what will we gain by assaulting
the character of such man based on questionable claims? Why are such
efforts being spearheaded by the very people with checkered past in
handling racial differences?

As he approaches his final day as Gallaudet’s 8th president, I honestly
think King deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.

Is that too much to ask?

  1. Shelmo,
Have you read the article written by Dr. Bob Johnson? You will understand why was IKJ no longer popular. I had respected him for years until I found the truth about him. I can’t trust him anymore. I removed the poster of him from my classroom. He is no longer hero. He is a villan. He has hurt so many people. We lost millions dollars. He gave Gallaudet a bad name. We have to re build the system so Gallaudet University can stay for other 100 years. We are losing Gallaudet because of him. We have to take Gallaudet back again in a good shape. I know I am not the only one who feel that way. Can we ask ikj to leave the campus right now before he is destroying many evidence??Albert

  3. IKJ is an oppressor in the making. We have been either his enablers or the oppressed. His solid support for JKF has many revelations (ranging from rubbing people the wrong way to embezzling a tenure through someone else) which can be described as an overall opprobrious conduct. We can never celebrate IKJ this way. I am sorry!

  4. What he (Jordan) has done in the last few months? Wake up child! He did damage to Gallaudet since he took over the presidency. One big terrible thing he did was to destroy the Preparatory program. When that happened, community and hearing colleges did not know what to do with the Deaf students residing in their communities/state. Then, he had some professors fired because they advocated ASL in the classroom. The list goes on and on… The man needs to go to jail for all the cruel things he did. And, i hope he does!

  5. He definitely disregarded the stakeholders of the Gallaudet when he kept promoting Fernandes. I don’t think the deaf community will ever forgive him for ordering the arrests of 135 students as well as ordering DPS to raid HMB and then the Brentwood Gate, which ended up injuring students both times.

  6. Slemo, You definitely had no credibility at all. You denied the handful of deaf people and me to be part of the Gally Net-L. You chose and screened out any independent-minded individuals on whom participate in the Gally Net-L. Why??

I finally saw the real side of you back to the Black Friday 13th night. You wore the coat hood to hide yourself from the spectators on the 6th Street. Why??? I waved ‘hi” to you. You responded smugly. You resembled much like the Dark Sidous in the Star Wars saga – hideous and dominant and power-hungry in private, then appeared as an ethical and hard-working individual (non-threatening) for the general public.

Your recent public posting surely show that you desepartely cling to your current adminstration postiton at all costs. Your direct superior is Paul Kelly! That is not your own postiton to coddle IKJ from the public anger. You ought to focus on your own given employment, not engage in “spin and deliver” message business. Comprendo?
