DPS and Sing Language Proficiency
elizabeth: this is disturbing, in the light of the DPS misconduct with the students the last few weeks. This also violates the university policy of open communicaiton
Regarding ASL and campus employees; I was on campus Wednesday and I saw
at the front gate two members of DPS at the guard house. They spoke
verbally to several deaf people who only signed ASL. These DPS people
couldn’t communicate with them. I am not picking on these people,
but, even as a hearing person and a campus visitor, I really do see the
need for campus employees to sign ASL. Neither guard could sign. They
pointed and spoke verbally. I feel bad for them. They did not hire
themselves. I felt worse for the deaf people. I really think it is
thoughtless for the DPS to put hearing people without signing skills in
a position where they have to communicate on campus.

DPS are no excuse!
Yes we know, it has been happening for long time…we did complains, no action was made or heard, hopefully they will start training sign language to EVERY non-signer staff and fac.
Remember the whole point that Bernard Holt was trying to tell the Board of Trustees when they ignored them (or perhaps Kunkle destroyed his letter before they read it).
There was $4 million dollars in the Gallaudet budget that Congress appropriated (as I understand it) for the purpose of training and hiring new campus police officers.
The whole scandal is that one Gallaudet administrator was trying to lie to Congress (by sending Congress a letter or a memo), inventing a story about why the money was not spent hiring new campus police officers.
Bernard Holt said that many people were interviewed to be new campus police officers and they were ready to be hired, but they were not, and then this administrator (on behalf of Jordan, we can assume) tried to pressure Holt to agree with letter/memo which contained lies about the situation.
This $4 million could have been used to train the new officers in ASL. It is a tragedy that the money was not spent properly and that Jordan/Weiner tried to cover it up.
This issue alone is more than enough reason to fire Jordan. Congress must begin investigations.
These people are responsible for the physical safety of thousands of people and order on campus. That they do not speak the language of these same people is inexcusable and has led to tragic results.
Resolution: Make sure the Board of Trustees and the incoming administration put this as top priority (and it won’t hurt to have a shakeup and improvement in the pay and training requirements of new DPS staff.)

It is ALL in the Administration & Operations Manual. As long as the Manual is not in our control, Gallaudet University will continue this type of language limbo. Capture the Manual NOW!
Carl, the Administration and Operation Manual itself contradicts with the open communication statement of the University? Which section would that be in?
Dianez I agree. One would think Jordan would take extreme pains to have the DOSS (now DPS) fluent in sign language after Dupree was killed. However, he didn’t and that says a lot how he feel about the deaf students.
Brian, good point. I wonder if there will be an independent financial audit coming up soon.
Bay area, it is awful and downright scary!
Bevo, I hear you. Really no excuse for the administrators to be so irresponsible and now we have batches of students injured by DPS the last several weeks!
Mishka, yeah, it is true.
There are too many video surveilles on campus about at least 100. So DPS can enjoy with joystick and watch what people doing around. It drives me very crazy. In addtion, they barely know about sign language skills. Zero Zero Zero on their forehead, they don’t know how to communicate.
