Endless Pondering

Staff/Faculty Reprisals Still On

With this statement, anyone who contributed to the protest,  including those who offered verbal support, are subjected to reprisals.  This means all staff and faculty may be disciplined, including demotions and losses of job. From what I’ve heard and what Dr Bob Johnson stated in his letter, Jordan is well known for his severe retaliations. The protest is not over, not by a long shot. We got Dr Fernandes out of the picture, but anyone who supported the protest is now consider fair game. We need to demand that they be protected from reprisals. They were courageous. They stood up against oppression and discrimination. They stood up for the students. They stood up for Gallaudet University.    How fair is it that they get punished, speaking against the wrongs? elizabeth

  1. IKJ is soooo quiet lately. Have you seen him lately??

He must be busy helping the judicial affairs office, identifying the outspoken people and call the rental cops to drag them off the campus?

  2. Yes, I agree that the protest is not over.

I strongly encourage all leaders to get together and come up with a strategy of expelling Jordan from office as soon as possible, and possibly even approaching the police to arrest him and Kelly immediately for authorizing the assault on the students at the Brentwood/MSSD gate.

  3. Students, you must not abandon staff, faculty and alumni! Lock down the campus again! Be BOLD!

  4. I think that some people need to understand the difference between reprisals and retaliation. Reprisals are neccessary and you should be disciplined for breaking the law or the Gallaudet code of conduct. Nowhere in the code of conduct does it say that you will be disciplined for speaking up or providing support to protesters. I see no reason to continue protesting in light of this press release. DPS officers who also violated the law or gallaudet’s code of conduct should be held just as accountable as those students who vandalized, etc.

  5. No, no!

During normal times, of course it is very inappropriate to block entrances, etc, etc.

But these were NOT normal times and it was very, very *appropropriate* for the students to do everything they did–blocking gates, getting arrested, etc.

This was an extraordinary circumstance that called for an extraordinary response, just like when President Lincoln suspended the writ of habeas corpus in order to *save* the Constitution and the Union.

If the protesters did not lock down the campus and get arrested, then Fernandes would have begun policies that would lead to Gallaudet being closed down. Congress would say that there was nothing going on at Gallaudet (under Fernandes) that was not already being provided for deaf students at mainstream universitites.

    This was an emergency situation.

Therefore, it is very, very WRONG for the Board to talk about reprisals. The second demand must be granted.

I never saw any evidence of non-protesters being threatened, etc. We must not believe that false propaganda.

  6. FSSA- half done is NOT Done!

Jane is removed but do not abandon each other by letting our leaders, whistle-blowers, and guardians of Gallaudet be punished! In 1988 reprisals were not given. If reprisals are unchallenged given now, it will be much harder to stand up again.

  7. Those arrested were processed by the Law. Why should Gallaudetians be punished more than any other trespasser in the city? They woke up the BoT to do the right thing… If reprisals and retialations occur, the BoT need to be accountable for their careless leadership.

  8. Take a look at the part of the statement above that says: “we expect the university to honor its long tradition of respect for each other” Had Mr Jordan and Miss Fernandes had shown respect to the faculty, staff, and all students during their capacity as president and provost, maybe the protest would not have happened. From what I have read, it looks like most of the protestors acted in a civil manner. I can not say that for the administration in the light of the fact some protestors were injured. Sure there was some property damage, but common sense tells me it was the very few who did this.

In conclusion I hope there are no reprisals to the faculty and staff. They had the right to express their feelings about the past happenings at Gallaudet that seemed to be covered up or put on back burner. Let Gallaudet heal into a better environment for ALL DEAF PERSONS, and may ASL thrive though out eternity.

  9. The administration violated people’s first amendment….that is wrong!!

  10. Ryani, this administration has a reputation for heavy retaliation. Though there may be no “reprisals” for those who spoke in support of the protest, they may be punished anyway, as it had been done to many people in the past, long before the protest erupted. This was the major reason why so many faculty and staff members were afraid to speak out openly, even though they voted against the appointment of Fernandes.

  12. If FSSA are punished then they need new BoT.

  13. Does this mean MJ is out of the job so Fernandes has a place to stay at Gallaudet?

I am not really surprised by all of this because the BoT has not shown any smarts throughout the protest so why should they start now? The whole Jordan cronie administration needs to be let go and start over fresh. Yes, this is impossible but its what need to be done.

  14. Please read Dr. Duffy’s limited freedom of speech as it can be found on gallaudet wensite on right column. It is very true that employees and faculty have LIMITED freedom of speech during their employment. If they are not happy with the administration decisions or strategies, the employees simply leave and look elsewhere. ALl of jobs at Gallaudet are not 100 percent secured. It is not realistic to feel 100 percent secured with employement because of their false behalf of freedom of speech is totally free. Freedom of speech is only covered for whenever someone voiced aganist the government actions, the government cant stop them most time. I will not be surprised some faculty and employees will be asked to leave for good, including MJ, Dr. Behan, Dr. Lewis, as well as other staff members showing advocate actions/voices aganist the administration. Good luck.

  15. Who is Dr Duffy? Can you give me a link, please? Thanks in advance

  16. Ruby,

Don’t be in denial. The politics of Gallaudet have now changed. You are living in the past.

Of course employees must be careful what they say, because they represent the company they work for. However, the oppression at Gallaudet had nothing to do with normal business practices.

Employees should feel free to express their opinions in-house. That’s how improvements are made.

King Jordan was a tyrannt who ruled by fear. He did not allow the most basic and healthiest forms of in-house communication and sharing of opinions. That’s intolerable.

He must now suffer the consequences of his evil actions and policies.
