Endless Pondering

Hunger Strikers?

Few people asked me about the hunger strikers. At the the news of Fernandes’s resignation, there were five strikers left, two from Oct 13th.  Allegedly at least two went to the hospital for medical treatment.  David Simmons and Larry Vollmar were still at the front gate, so they got up on the rally stand where they were cheered and applauded for their courageous roles in this protest.

The hunger strikers have been one of  not only my, but all Gallaudet Community’s worries.  After four hours of interviews nine days ago, my heart was broken and I’ve kept close tabs with the hunger strikers since then.  We all are very relieved to hear that the hunger strikers will start eating again.

The protocol for resuming a normal diet is very slow. One cannot start eating normal food immiedately as the body will not be able to handle it. They will need to start with liquid supplements and gradually add soft food, then solid foods, little at a time. The recovery will take days, if not weeks.

Our hopes are that Christine R, affectionally known as Coco, will regain the temporary loss of vision experienced the last several days of her hunger strike.

In my opinion, they are the real heroes of the protest.

This entry will be heavily moderated. Due to the sensitive nature of the hunger strike, no negative comments will be posted. elizabeth

  1. Thanks for sharing this update. Am relieved JKF resigned for a lot of reasons – and this is one of them. I was hoping the strikers would not take this to the extreme. It is their decision but would hate to see any serious effects all due to a short-sighted woman.

Now the strikers can get back to normal health.

  2. Finally, finally some news about the hunger strikers. They too have been my main concern throughout the protest. I felt bad that with all the celebrations, no one had mentioned them. I am very relieved to know that they are getting appropriate medical attention and hopefully will be fine soon. Thank you!

  3. Ushers Syndrome is such that vision lost is practically never regained. Christine had said she was experiencing blurry vision, which is not necessarily an advancement of her Ushers. So I wouldnt worry too much. She did the right thing, leaving the hunger strike. Eyes need nutrients to work properly and stave off disease, and I am relieved she has decided her vision was much more precious than JKF’s job status. Hugs Christine!

  4. I am also relieved and hopeful that there will be no lasting damamge to the brave hunger strikers. I’d like to clearify something: JKF did not reginged. She was “terminated”-she did not resigned on her own.

My prayers go out for the healing of this wonderful Gallaudet community.

  7. Also relieved that the hunger strikers will be all right. Hopefully this never happens again nor will conditions make it necessary to have hunger strikers again. Speedy recovery and no lasting residue!

  9. The hunger strikers were discharged from the hospital yesterday afternoon just in time to participate in the final 5 pm rally. They were greeted warmly by the other protesters.
