Your Help Needed to Educate A Skeptic
A reader wants you to help her explain to the skeptical man what the issues are and why. She has been waiting for three days would help her, but I’ve been too busy blogging, networking, researching, and contacting the media. Here is your opportunity to educate the readers, too. I’ll get back to this blog letter
From a list.serv
“Of course, I respect your opinion. But I do have quite a few questions
based on what Im hearing from you, Ms Xxxxxx
First, you say that the administration is corrupt. In what way is the
administration corrupt? Are they taking bribes? Are they misusing their
administrative powers?
Second, you say that Gallaudet is bringing in students knowing that they are
not ready for college. How do you know this? Is there evidence for this?
I understand that you feel that the process is flawed. According to the
Gallaudet website, however, the university asserts that they had a broadly
inclusive process for selecting the next president and that the process was
led by an Gallaudet alumni, Pamela Holmes, and the committee included
faculty, students, and alumni. It even had an open forum on January 19,
2006. There were multiple updates on the process throughout the year.
Heck, there was even a review of the search process itself by the Board of
Trustees. So how was the process flawed if it contained people that
represented virtually all the components of the university, included public
input, and many updates from the search committee, not to mention a review
of the process?
Just curious.

I am a former supporter of Dr. Fernandes. I have not been a Gally student, but I have personally visited the rally site for the protest. I will answer the questions the best I can. I hope I bought enough time so people like Elissa, Ryan, Tara Holcomb, or any of the student leaders can explain better.
1) Money wise, the administration does not appear to be corrupt to me. However, the way Jane was picked it looks like it is corrupt. The other finalists, do not have a PhD degree to my knowledge. Jane has received two no-confidence votes by the Faculty Senate, and the Student Govt is not recongizing her as the ninth President.
2) It is more about her qualifications and leadership skills. As provost (the number one person after King Jordan), the admission acceptance rate as Charity Rees Himes announced to Vocational Rehab counselors at the 2005 Vocational Rehabilitation conference for first time freshman was 91%. I am a VR counselor for ten years and I have difficulty remembering any client who was turned down by Gally’s Admissions committee. ACT scores to get in are low, you need only a 12 or 14 to get in. Most colleges I know of require at least 19 to 21 to get even marginal consideration (such as University of Nebraska-Omaha). Graduation rate as found by the Dept of Education is less than 20 percent. If I had such a low placement rate for VR clients, I would be fired long ago.
3) She is lacking people skills. I can give some examples but my lunch break is expiring. I will be sure to hunt the blog tonite and provide you some examples, however the open letters, especially from Davina Brimmer at http://www.indy4fssa.blogspot.com, will give the greatest example, she was there for both her MA and BA degrees.
4) this in my opinion is also becoming a religious freedom issue eventually. Gally administration is also considering punishment for protestors, even though they didn’t destory any property. Well, if Gally lies, punishes, etc., I have belief the next thing Gally will take away from students besides civil rights and academic freedom to explore, they will also take religious rights next.
http://www.indyforfssa.blogspot.com is the correct website, not the one below my comments. Sorry for the error.
Bill, thank you for your feedback. It is interesting to hear the perspective of a VR counselor. That is sad about the low graduation rate.
There are many allegations about corruptions on the campus, not just the selection of the presidential candidates.

I have cut and pasted here the other blog commentary. Please, sir or madam: note that Gally has a low graduation rate from 90% in 2000 to 69% in 2005. I believe, however, the rate is worse than what the US Dept of Education thinks. And this is of those who stay. I hope I am wrong, but I have heard the retention rate is in the low tens. Such statistics should get Jane fired, but the problem is that the Board of Trustees is asleep.
