Endless Pondering

Rebuttal To Levinson’s Denial

I personally witnessed a conversation between Ken Levinson and Bill
Graham at the Chicago O’Hare airport on July 28, 2006 at an airport
gate.  I was scheduled to take the same flight from Chicago to Dulles
airport as both Levinson and Graham and they were unaware of my
presence.

I sat only a few feet away and watched them both hold a long
conversation, wherein Ken Levinson very clearly said that the deaf
community is “immature.”  He spoke the words “not mature” with his
mouth and used the signs for NOT MATURE.  There is no doubt about this
in my mind that he said that.

The topic of discussion was the protest.  Apparently he was alluding to
the fact that the deaf people on the Board of Trustees are mostly oral
deaf and that those oral deaf people are more “mature” than the others.
The conversation between Levinson and Graham was mostly an oral
conversation, which was supported by only a few signs.  Levinson’s
point was that he believed that culturally (non-oral) deaf people are
not mature enough to take over the governance of Gallaudet or take over
running the Board of Trustees.

During that conversation, Levinson made disparaging remarks against
both Ben Soukup and Harvey Goodstein and said at one point that the
Board was going to have to “bite the bullet” and remove one of those
members. (I’m pretty sure the bite-the-bullet remark was directed at
Goodstein.)  It seemed clear to me that Levinson was doing Jordan’s
dirty work, and spreading malicious gossip about both Goodstein and
Soukup which were intended as warnings to both of them they must follow
Jordan’s party line.

Since Jane Fernandes lied to the Washington Post, saying that she had
meetings with protesers all night and into the morning hours when HMB
was taken over, and since Jordan has lied to the media about protesters
not being sincere negotiators, when in fact HE was the person who never
discussed the issues, we must conclude that nothing coming from the
Jordan administration, including the Board of Trustees, is credible or
believable.  The Board and the administration are corrupt.

Levinson’s denial about comments that were attributed to him are not
credible.  He should be removed from the Board immediately.  Brian Riley, October 23, 2006

Statement from Board of Trustee Ken Levinson

Sunday October 22, 2006 8:15 p.m.

“I want to reassure the Gallaudet Community that the recent negative
statement attributed to me about deaf peoples’ abilities is totally
inaccurate. As a long-time member of the University’s Board of
Trustees, I know better than most that ‘deaf people can do anything.’
a statement I have made several times publicly, most notably at
President Jordan’s retirement announcement. My work with the deaf
community has always been about working together toward our common
collective goals. I strongly believe everyone has the ability to make
significant contributions to this world. This is another thinly veiled
smear tactic used by some to further divide our wonderful community and
to discredit the Board’s appointment of Dr. Fernandes as president. It
is completely misleading, and it is false.”

  1. I feel like I should say that I am 100% for the protest before I point something out… I’ve gone to gallaudet to show my support for the protest four times since it all started in may.

brian riley used to have a blog about the protest. the blog was quite active during the summer- he even blogged about appearing at a meeting for board of trustee members at a hotel in dulles and getting congressional help. BUT one day, every blog entry was deleted.

my question is that- if brian actually had witnessed the converstation, why didn’t he mention that on his blog??? I would assume that someone as devoted to the protest movement as brian riley would jump at the chance to point out audism among the board of trustees (audist members have absolutely NO place on a board that’s supposed to have a deaf university’s best interests at heart).

  2. Yes, I have the same concern as you do. This just feels fabricated, so I’m not putting my hopes into this.

  5. The answer to #1 (”cs”) is very simple. I didn’t rush to mention the conversation, because I did not want to alienate Ken Levinson. I was holding out hopes that he would somehow possibly be influenced by the protesters and support us. Also, I was protecting Bill Graham, thinking that he might support us eventually also.

At the beginning of the conversation that they had at the gate at O’Hare Airport, Levinson mentioned to Graham that he had read the Gallyprotest press release–the one that exposed the existence of the secret Board meeting at the Dulles Hyatt–and he told Graham: “They want us to be more assertive and not pay such close attention to the president”–(by memory, not an exact quote)–Then they both looked at each other, as if they both knew that they had been letting Jordan run the show. It seemed as if they got the point and I was hopeful they would be influenced by us.

I actually did mention the conversation on August 27t–almost 2 months ago–on the dhh-community blog:

    QUOTE FROM THE BLOG ENTRY:

I personally witnessed Board members discussing the situation. The method is that Jordan has isolated two people on the Board who are the Deaf community’s best representatives: Harvey G. and Ben H. [sic--I should have said "Ben S." but I was typing too fast]

Jordan sent out the word about how those two Board members should be expelled from the Board. Then when that talk gets around, *all* the Board members feel threatened, because they see the political power and intimidation being used against those two members and they know that they better follow the party line.

    UNQUOTE

I have witnessed a lot of things and I have a lot of information that I have not shared. It doesn’t make sense to tell everything you know right at the moment you learn about it. Most of the time it makes better sense to hold off and wait for the appropriate time. Some things might hurt the protest if I revealed them, so I keep the information under wraps.
