Endless Pondering

Why Not Give Fernandes A Chance?

Asked a pro fernandes reader:

“Why don’t we join the administration in changing the status quo and in one year we can revisit the issues that we were protesting. This way we can say the administration did listen or didn’t listen. We need to give Dr. Fernandes and the administration a chance. They do agree with us about needing to depart from the status quo and to address the needs of a diverse Gallaudet community. Unity for a diverse Gallaudet! “

An excellent question. Fernandes has 11 years to prove herself. The result: A protest against her because of her track record. What did she do?  Read below and tell us “Should We Give Fernandes Another Chance?” Yes? No? Let the world hear you.

-Three no-confidence votes given to Fernandes  the last six years by the faculty senate.

-Letter from Clerc Center explaining the damage Fernandes has caused during her years as Vice President prior to her appointment as Provost.  http://news.gufssa.com/category/fssa/staff/clerc-center/

-Poor reviews of academic programs by Dept of Education the last five years , cumulating with a failing grade last year under her administration.  PART: (http://www.whitehouse.gov/omb/expectmore/summary.10003306.2005.html )

-No constructive dialogue over many years with the faculty, staff, and students and to this day, she still refuses to have any dialogue where she’ll work with Gallaudet Community

Should Gallaudet University give her another chance?

  3. Why not give her a chance?

People had NO choice but to give her “chances” prior to her position as a provost and then as a provost.

That is more than plenty, if you ask me…

  4. I want to understand what I’m reading here:

“-No dialogue over many years with the faculty, staff, and students and to this day, she still refuses to have any dialogue. ”

Ok, JF did come to the protest asking for a small group of students to talk to her.

Granted, she wasn’t listening to them, or when people showed up to talk to her the other day.

Or a concerned parent regarding her son’s education at KDS.

That’s THREE that I have heard of.

Even though she REFUSES to listen to them, but it could be argued that she DID have dialogues – though it did not appear that way, for instance she did not offer anything on the table.

    All I heard was:

With a concerned parent who met her in private regarding her son’s teacher who repeatedly calls in and subsitution teacher doing nothing:

JF: (paraphrased) “If you don’t like it, go to another school!” – I would have NEVER heard of this when I complained to my school regarding my son’s teachers or the classroom itself.

    The students at the rally?

JF: “I will listen only if you open the campus!” (paraphasing again)

    Meeting with concerned protestors:

JF: “I will NOT resign. I got plans that I won’t tell. I got support.”

That’s all the dialogues I’ve heard of.

  5. What is the “status quo” at Gallaudet that needs to be changed?

  6. in response to marylk, I concur with you.

However, learning about those “selected” spokespeople, they DO listen to people and will take their concerns to the media.

There seems to be disorganization in regards to communication and I think that’s what FSSA is trying to accomplish.

I doubt it would prevent anyone from talking to media, but they just want to make this as organized as possible to strengthen their goal of removing JF.

That’s what the protest is about, anyway.

There’s nothing that can stop you from expressing your feelings here and amongst people.

  7. Jane has a plan but wont tell now..
I say..Let her prove it for 2 yrs.
If you don’t like her plan..then do
what the students are doing now.

  8. Rosemarie, that just doesn’t make sense.

She had a chance for 11 years. She had the power to some extend in her 6 years as a Provost – oh she sure did, alright. It was poorly done and the damages are too great to afford her another chance.

Why “wait 11 years”? I don’t think so.

  9. This is response to Rosemarie.

Two years? BOT says 1 year.

She blew it already the day she came running out of the gate, to the contrary of the BOT order. Read what Kinney said in Wisconsin GUAA article.

and what’s more, she already alienated a lot of people during her 11 years and not changing one bit.

I said no more chances. She already had 11 years of chances wasted.
