Deaf Blogs Targeted By Fernandes Supporters
I decided last night to put my blog on moderation after receiving two death threats and a physical threat against the protesters on top of constant negative comments without a break. I had very strong suspicions, but didn’t want to say anything. I know for sure one other deaf blogger has this problem and many readers suspect the same thing.
Like I said in an earlier post, many comments were actually from a very small group of pro-Fernandes fans. The volume of their e mails have led some readers to believe that there are many pro-Fernandes supporters, but that’s not the case.
Upon turning on moderation and blocking a few comments, two of the pro Fernandes fans apologized, but others were blocked because they continued to make ugly comments .
Guess what?
There came a barrage of nasty e mails from new fernandes supporters, along with three who disappeared a few days ago until today. What are the chances that they all would come here on the same day I activated the moderation option?
In case you haven’t figured out, this basically confirmed not only my suspicions, but those of others. There is definitely a group of pro Fernandes fans working together as a team. The timing is too striking to be a coincidence, especially considering the track record of the some Fernandes supporters.
So there you have the answer. The pro-Fernandes blogs are moderated, so that only one side is heard from. The pro-protest blogs are not, so that both sides are free to speak, but the threats and ever-constant nasty comments from pro-Fernandes force me to moderate my blog.
What are the chances that these people are working for Fernandes? The information two of them gave in the past proved that they were insiders at Gallaudet.
If all these pro-Fernandes fans can do is make threats on protesters, then they don’t really have much of a case, do they?

why would u block opinions of other poeople when u feel like your opinions are not being heard.
Why don’t you report them to the police? Your action will send a message to Pro-Fernandes supporters to back off from Deaf bloggers.
Yes, the messages containing death threats and physical threat have already been reported to the police early yesterday am.
IJK was born hearing and grew up in a hearing world. Then he became deaf and learned ASL later in his life. Same thing goes for JFK except she was born deaf. Since deaf people don’t like JFK, then why did they welcome IJK as a Gally President in 1988???? Care explain this to me and the rest of us ?

While I’m merely an interested observer and not affiliated in any way to Gally, I can infer that the protest has nothing to do with JKF’s “deafness”, but rather is about her leadership, in which her performance were questionable.
Audiogram isn’t a true criteria of a college president, even for a deaf college.
It really doesn’t matter when they learned ASL. We always have newcomers to the Deaf community at Gallaudet. The problem is not whether JKF or IKJ are culturally Deaf, either. There are plenty of people here at Gallaudet who do not consider themselves culturally Deaf.
IKJ was welcomed because Gallaudet never had a deaf president. It was one step in the direction of self-empowerment and proving that deaf people were fully capable of high level administrative positions.
People do not like JKF for a number of reasons. The fact that she didn’t learn ASL until later in life is not the problem. How she has implemented changes in the past and her lack of follow up are problems. Her presumption and repeated claims that she is the ONLY person who can lead Gallaudet is a problem. Her refusal (or inability) to acknowledge the profound lack of support of her as a leader is a problem.
For what it is worth, there are a lot of people who do not support Jane, and they come from all kinds of different backgrounds.

number 3: jane fernandes being “not deaf enough” is NOT the issue here. from what i’ve gathered (and seen), she isn’t willing to work with the faculty or students. and her attitude could use some work.
now, i ask you… how is she going to lead an university with a conscending, superior attitude?
MishkaZena, well done! I routinely get like 4 to 6 emails attacking me — the best one was talking about killing me and chopping me into bits and boil me then feed to the dogs. I thought it was funny and creative of him to THINK like that!
What does not kill you makes you stronger, MZ. You’re on the same level along with me and Elisa — we MUST expect people to throw the daggers at us from time to time. That’s why we have the option to defend ourselves.

Regarding comment made by KD on Oct 23, 2006. I didn’t know JFK was female and born deaf…. I think deaf people adore JFK. They just dont like JKF, get your acroynoms correctly.
Supporters of the protest and those who do not support the protest comments should be published to give readers a balanced press. Those who use hateful words are immature adults and I am speaking for both pro- and anti- protest. Let’s focus on the issuesand discuss them rather than atacking specific individuals and using words intended to hurt or destroy.

I agree with above comments, the protest is NOT at all about how JKF was raised; it is about the unbalanced Bo T and that is tremendously unfair.
I grew up just like JKF yet i still support the protesters 100%. Why? Thats easy to figure why.

From my experience so far, open discussion forums and blogs are not suited for true democractic style of debate. Some people just can’t behave themselves especially when they are shielded by seemingly anyonmousity of the Internet.
A forum can be moderated in a manner the discussion itself is open and free but at same time it is also a safe place for people to express themselves in respectful manner as opposite to flame each other.

Okay, This is getting dumber and dumber…Hope you guys are happy that Jane is out.
The only issue I have here is that in 1988 They welcomed I Jordan King as Gally President. He grew up hearing and later became deaf. He also learned ASL later in his life. You guys welcomed him as Gally President. Now as for Jane, you rejected her just because she learned ASL at the age of 23 and went to an oralist school. Obviously, there is something wrong with this picture. I think Getting rid of Jane is beyond stupidity!
