Endless Pondering

Information To Ask At 2PM Fernandes Interview

Fernandes will be online Monday, Oct. 23, art 2 p.m. ET to discuss the reasons why she is not withdrawing her name despite growing opposition to her appointment as president.

Submit your questions and comments before or during the discussion.

Gallaudet: University Protests – washingtonpost.com

Here is your chance to tell the audience the real issues and ask her WHY she refuses to listen to resign. Ask her for an explanation of any of these issues  below.

Factual Sheet:

-The deaf culture and deaf identity issues are red herrings to distract the media and the public from the  real  issues.

-88% of faculty members, Clerc Center, Student Congress, Gallaudet Alumni Association and National Association of the Deaf calling for her resignation.

-Three no-confidence votes given to Fernandes as provost the last six years by the faculty senate.

-Tenure of Fernandes illegally awarded without the permission of the faculty senate.

-Letter from Clerc Center explaining the damage Fernandes has caused during her years as Vice President prior to her appointment as Provost.  http://news.gufssa.com/category/fssa/staff/clerc-center/

-7 out of 20 Board of Trustees  are opposed to Fernandes’s appointment, contradicting Gallaudet’s claims of Bot’s unanimity.

-Fernandes’ threat to BoT and the University in a private e mail.

-Poor reviews of academic programs by Dept of Education the last five years , cumulating with a failing grade last year under her administration.  PART: (http://www.whitehouse.gov/omb/expectmore/summary.10003306.2005.html )

-No construcive dialogue over many years with the faculty, staff, and students and to this day, she still refuses to have any effective dialogue.

-Gallaudet always have students with diverse communication modes from the first year of its establishment. Many wear hearing aids, some are hard of hearings, many from mainstreamed programs, some wearing cochlear implants.

-Public relations department issuing erroneous statements to the media consistently. DPS brutality did happen.  Students did get injured.

-False claims that the protesters are terrorists and anarchists, when it is in fact a peaceful and civil protest.

–From the very beginning, Gallaudet University always accepted students with diverse communication backgrounds

-Her claims of being only one to lead the university is false. Many very qualified people are available to lead the university

  1. Also, another question for JKF:

The students, who were arrested on Black Friday for blocking all the gates at night, have received the letters from the Gallaudet’s Judicial Affairs office. What will happen to them? Who controls the judicial review?

  2. The questions that I’d ask would be, “How do you propose to bring 82% of the faculty who have voiced no-confidence in your leadership around?” “How will you be able to focus on the important mission a president of a university must undertake of friend-building when so many have opposed you?”

  3. A few more points:

    1) Her threats to BoT in private emails were disclosed by anonymous source but was later colloborated by herself in Washington Post, IIRC.

    2) Don’t forget that there was no report filed with DC police RE: gun threat she alleged on NBC4 last week.

    3) Clarification on why she insist she is the “only one who can lead Gallaudet”, and how that will be accomplished without support of faculty, students and staff.

    4) (I think this may be in poor taste; I’ll leave this up to other to decide) How did she perform during the two murders, especially considering that the murderer knew her and went to MSSD/Gally under her terms there respectively. (I don’t know if it has been verified whether she “took Joseph under her wing”, or was a merely concidence, but she did know who he was prior to murder AFAICT)

  4. Anonymous can you clarify why on # 3?. If the Gallaudet Community has some unresolved issues on how Fernandes handled the murders, especially if they had bad experiences, like Tom Koch did, they could ask her. But I don’t know if this is a good idea or not. You’ll have to ask others.

Seriously, did you really feel she bungled these cases? If so, why? I don’t know anything since I wasn’t involved with Gally back then.

Greg, that is a good question, too

    sheila, another good question.

Wow, you all are on a roll! :)

  5. I dont see how the murders have anything to do with the Provost. If you want to focus on her role as a Provost – focus on the academic side – This is why we have Counselors, RA, CRE, and all them to do the support for the non-academic side.

    Just my thoughts.

  6. Koch, that makes sense. I wasn’t involved with Gally back then, but I do remember watching her on TV as she spoke to the media frequently during these murders. Why was she speaking to the media, by the way, if she was responsible for the academic affairs, not the Student Life?

  7. I had long graduated when this incident happened and my brother explained to me what went on and what happened. But you also have to remember the delegation as well. One person can’t fill their plates so much it would just overload. She might have been talking to the media to gain a public face. I mean seriously like our President of U.S. he talks to the media and the US about issues but yet he has people behind the curtains doing all the work for him. I’m not saying its wrong – but what Im saying is focus on the role of the academia issues of Gallaudet – not her role as a counselor for crisis. *She does NOT have a degree in Social Work or whatsoever so she’d be totally incompetent for this kind of stuff*

  8. I need help here… I tend to ramble and can’t summarize it to one question to submit.

FIX ISSUES NOW – NOT “FUTURE” ISSUES

It’s very clear that she was NOT able, or IGNORE to fix issues especially the last six years as a Provost – making sure teachers are qualified in ASL to teach students, DPS learning ASL (not offering extra pay if they would), and the list goes on. Not to mention providing safety of Gallaudet’s students (blind-deaf, deafies with DPS, etc).

As a cochlear implant user, I’m PISSED OFF that she keeps bringing up cochlear implant – as if we are the “ONLY” group she wants to focus on leading.

Hello? You don’t even have our support, either!

Gallaudet is FOR VISUAL people – not for people learning to hear! Geez whiz!!

FIX THE CURRENT ISSUES – NOT “FUTURE” ISSUES (though I don’t see any because there are currently cochlear implant users attending Gallaudet).

I mean, did people with hearing aids come to Gally to hear?

No. They came to learn and associate with the Deaf Community, learning about themselves and growing with self-esteem about their deaf identity.

    What’s next, Jane?

  9. Ok…I feel better.

I just remembered that is exactly what she wants – dividing us, and distracting from the real issues.

    Forget it.

The process was flawed – that is the primary focus.

Secondly, her leadership skills is ineffective as proven, especially the last 6 years.

MZ, you may remove my #8, if you wish.

I just let it get the better of me. :)

  10. My suggestion is DONT play Jane s fucking game. IF she proposed this “forum” you can bet she has an agenda behind
Dont let her claim she negotiating or in dialogue with you
DONT do anything she suggests. I’m VERY serious. She will manipulate this and put her own spin on it and tell the
board she is a reasonable person trying have a dialogue with you. Or some such crap. Be patient and let the board meet and remove her. remember she sent the board this threatening email!
