Endless Pondering

Threats Against Protesters Prohibited In This Blog

There has been some commenters who left exceptionally ugly remarks against other people. In case the readers may not be aware, these nasty comments come from few pro-fernandes readers who are extremely vocal.

Several days ago one person left two veiled death threats against one student leader. Today I received a threat of physical violence toward the protesters. The two pro fernandes fans who have been leaving voluminous comments in an attempt to drown out the anti-fernandes fans went too far when they issued threats of murder and physical violence against the protesters, especially at one specific student leaders.

It becomes obvious to me that these few people are not here to participate in healthy dialogue but looking for opportunities to demean, ridicule, and oppress the deaf readers. It really sickens me to see how these few people behave. I will no longer permit these people to hijack my blog for systematic degradation of deaf people. If they are desperate to push their agenda, they are welcome to set up their own blogs.

For now, due to the violent threats, my blog will be moderated and these threats already left will be reported to the police.

Elizabeth

Additional Comment: You need to understand that I am not responsible for other anti-fernandes blogs, nor should I pay the consequences for these blogs. If they offend you, then you should deal with them instead of hijacking my blog. Even better, don’t frequent the blogs that disturbs you.

I am invested in promoting open and healthy dialogue in my blog.  So far you and few specific individuals haven’t shown any indication that you are willing to do this. In your comments, you have been demeaning and dehumanizing the deaf community without a break. You have had your chances and you blew it. I believe I have been too generous for too long because I really don’t wish to come to a point that I must moderate my blog. However, now that I see you were here for a specific reason, I will no longer tolerate them.

If you want to bash the anti-fernandes fans, set up your own blog. Who is stopping you from setting up your own blog? Incidentally, I notice that the pro fernandes blogs are heavily moderated.

So this seems to be a systematic approach to silence those who disagree with you in my blog. If this is reflective of the atmosphere at Gallaudet, this is a perfect example of oppression and intimidation. If so, this is really scary.

  1. Well said! Desperate soldiers of Fernandes resort to physical threat. How shameful! They feel that they are losing… So be it! When they lose we celebrate!

  2. MZ, I don’t know who left threatening messages on you blog and certainly don’t condone it. However, if ugly remarks and nasty comments are offending you think of how over the past six months the completely nasty comments and threats made to IKJ, JKF and the BoT have affected them. Just review the many anti-JKF blogs and you I hope can agree this has become way to personal.
I believe if everyone takes a deep breath. Their can be a meeting of with everyone to try and work this protest out.
First, level heads must prevail and the meeting has to be about making Gallaudet a better place, not about placing non-negotiable demands.
You will probably not let this message stay but for the good of the university you should all try to reason rather than demand.

  4. I agree with you. The pro-JKF blogs are quick to remove any comments that don’t agree with their point of view, whereas the pro-Gallaudet blogs tend to allow all views, as long as they are not nasty or threatening.

As Ricky Taylor noted in RidorLIVE, the pro-JKF blogs are mostly the product of PR firms hired and paid for by the Gallaudet administration and should simply be ignored.

  5. MZ, If i offended you I do apologize. I do believe however that the only way to resolve this protest is exactly what I have said before. Their must be open dialogue between all parties concerned who are all willing to give something to make Gallaudet a better place. No one likes demanding people.
This is as open and healthy as it gets. Promoting the protest is not solving the real issues trhat have come about.

  6. True! But why Gallaudet Adm. allow the pro-fernandes tell the media ugly things about the protesters and they are not arrested or removed from the university. When I was on campus, many divided groups on the campus have battled for several years after JKF was selected.

  9. I agree that nobody should be making ugly comments about anyone and also apologize for getting caught up in the moment of debate.
The ony way I can see in getting divided groups is to come together striving for the benefit of all.
I agree anti-protesters as well as the protesters have said things in the heat of the moment. This is not helping.
I emplore everyone to seek toward a unilateral direction for the good of Gallaudet.

  10. 2005, Former Michigan School for the Deaf substitute teacher Ryan Commerson went on an eight-day hunger strike in a protest over how the school was educating children. Commerson also wanted current Principal Cecelia Winkler (She is hearing and her ASL skill) removed in favor of hiring a deaf principal.

He isn’t not arrested or removed from the university. It isn’t fair.

  11. I applaud you for posting the blog in the first place. I did a story about it called “Power To the People” on my own blog (check it out if you wish). I agree that the people threatening physical violence towards anti-Fernandes protestors are nothing but cowards.

I also agree with the (painfully) common sense thought that “if you don’t like it, don’t read it” Then again, somone who threatens violence over a blog can’t be the brightest star in the sky, can they?

  12. Chris H, he stood back because the protesters need him to continue working. It was the vote of the protesters. I agree with his tactic.

    Ice9,thanks.
