Gallaudet Trustees Split on Fernandes

Gallaudet University trustees have split in their support for incoming president Jane K. Fernandes, a shift from their united front endorsing her as the best person to lead the school for the deaf.

… should wait and see. But the implications of this comment seriously bothers me. It may be in going public Fernandes has overplayed her hand-won't people call for an investigation, now that it's known there's some violation? There is also this, from the same article : ” . . . I'm not really thinking of resigning, no. But I'm trying to think of how . . . to work from now until January to be in a position to be where I can be effective.” Why January? What will make Jane Fernandes more effective in January? …

Readers Still Don’t Get It

Your Comments On…

Deaf Culture and the Gallaudet Uproar

“Part of a newspaper’s responsibility is to educate readers. The protests and turmoil over the Gallaudet University presidency give The Post an excellent opportunity to take readers who hear into a world where most people don’t. Although daily coverage has been good, more depth and breadth is needed. - By Deborah Howell

The media are doing a much better job now than before, but the readers still don’t get it. Here is a wonderful opportunity for you to educate the readers and tell them what the real issues are

Here is the rough draft of factual sheet guidelines. I’ve prepared. Please write in your own words

 __________________________________________________________________________

-The deaf culture and deaf identity issues are red herrings to distract the media and the public away from the  real  issues.

REAL ISSUES:

A flawed presidential candidate search and ineffectual leadership of Dr Fernandes the last eleven years.

-88% of faculty members, Clerc Center, Student Congress, Student Body Government, Gallaudet Alumni Association and National Association of the Deaf calling for resignations.

-Three no-confidence votes given to Fernandes as provost the last six years by the faculty senate.

-Tenure of Fernandes illegally awarded without the permission of the faculty senate.

-Letter from Clerc Center explaining the damages Fernandes have created during her years as Vice President prior to her appointment as a Provost. http://news.gufssa.com/category/fssa/staff/clerc-center/

-7 out of 20 Board of Trustees  are opposed to Fernandes’s appointment, contradicting Gallaudet’s statement that the Bot are unanimous in the appointment of Fernandes.

-Fernandes had  threatened BoT and University in a private e mail.

-Poor reviews of the academic programs by Dept of Education the last five years, accumulating with a failing grade last year.  PART: (http://www.whitehouse.gov/omb/expectmore/summary.10003306.2005.html )-Controversial policy restricting the students’ expressions

-Gallaudet always have students with diverse communication modes from the first year of its establishment. Many wear hearing aids, some are hard of hearings, many from mainstreamed programs, some wearing cochlear implants. -Over many years, Fernandes didn’t have constructive dialogues with the faculty, staff, and students and to this day, she still refuses to have any effective dialogue.

-Public relations department issuing erroneous statements to the media: DPS brutality did happen.  Students did get injured.  The university, not the protesters, closed MSSD and KDES.

-Fernandes claimed that the protesters are terrorists and anarchists.  On the contrary, this is a peaceful and civil protest.

-Systematic intimidation and harassment on students, including protesters, by campus security guards, most who are not fluent in sign language.

As this rough draft is still being worked and constantly updated, let me know if it can be improved. Thanks. elizabeth

The March To Capitol: My Perspective

I went to Gally this morning around 8 where I met Ryan. He got a volunteer, a talented art major, to decorate two banners for my car in which I’d be riding instead of marching.  Mindful of others who, like me, may be too sick or tired to walk,  I’d opened my car for anyone to ride in. Two ladies grabbed the opportunity.

It was arranged that the car would be in the middle of the march, so I can interview the marchers while en route to the Capitol. But, as I crossed the intersection of FL Ave and 8th St, a  D.C. cop told me to get out of the march for safety and go at the rear of the march. With deep disappointment I waited  as my husband swerved the car out of the marchers’ path, the car idling while I watched the march proceed in front of me. I took pictures, cheered the protesters and chatted with a DC cop who knew sign language, and she was very friendly. We hugged each other.

The march was very inspiring. You see, I was a participant in the Deaf President Now protest 1988. So it was deja vu in 2006.  We rejoined the march at the rear with several other cars and a few police escorts behind us, with my husband driving and I waving the US flag given to me by a fellow protester. Some onlookers just watched in befuddlement, but others cheered and waved back.  On a few rowhouses on 8th St, were large banners in support of Unity of Gallaudet.

In front of me, the march extended more than few blocks. In fact, I couldn’t see the front of the march from where I was at the end. The march lasted perhaps thirty minutes, if not more.

My husband commented that this was the first time he was in a march, and it was unusual to drive in the middle of the street, going through stoplights. We followed a Jeep carrying a big banner showing  a more-than-life-sized image of a scowling Fernandes, wearing a crown on which were the words “Only Me!”

  # 30 is a picture of my car – March to the Capitol (Saturday).  kudos to the hardworking photographer covering this protest

Response to Reprisals – Enough is Enough

Deep Eyes, you are absolutely right. It is a well planned scheme
to undermine the resolve of protestors and dissolve the protest.
They will use intimidation and terror against those who made
themselves vulnerable by being arrested. But it is really an abuse
of the spirit of the law. The word of the law says that whoever gets
arrested is bad, because s/he broke the law. But the spirit of the
law says that peaceful sit-in protestors who were carried away
limp by unwilling police forces, are NOT bad people. They only
made a political statement against oppression.

When the administration unleashes more intimidation and more
terror against peaceful protestors trying to crack them, break
them and humiliate them away from taking their stance, it chooses
a way of abusing the power of the law. Their pursuit of a one-sided
political agenda they announced about creating a ‘new order’ and
doing away the old concept of Deaf, does not justify these actions.
Their arrogant intention to conquer the Deaf soul by technologization
is a suspect political agenda that should be questioned at least.

We cannot allow them to abuse the spirit of law to force the
acceptance of a skewed political agenda on its victim, the Deaf
community, in particular the constituents of Gallaudet University.

BoT Ken Levinson Must Be Removed!

A member of Board of Trustees Ken Levinson has recently
told a group of deaf people that he considered deaf signers
as dumb. Actually, he continues to think that deaf signers
are dumb because he said  the same story to President of
NAD Bobbie Beth Scoggins ten years ago. We must tell
the BoT to remove Ken Levinson from the BoT because
of his discrimiantion towards deaf signers. See below.

Press Release #2 – A Board Member Says that Signing Deaf People are Dumb
This entry was originally published at gallaudet protests

Friday, October 20, 2006

On Tuesday October 17, Gallaudet alumni Butch Zein, Robin Horwitz, James
Brune, and Bridgetta Bourne-Firl met with Ken Levinson, a Trustee of the
Board of Gallaudet University, at his office in San Francisco. They
discussed their concerns at the meeting, and at the end of the
conversation Mr. Levinson said, “I always thought deaf people that use
sign language were dumb people but eventually I learned they weren’t, and
I enjoyed chatting with you all.”

This brought to mind an instance that Bobbie Beth Scoggins experienced
when she played a softball game with Mr. Levinson twenty years ago where
he said the same thing.

A Tsunami of Deaf Pride-Paul Singleton

A tsunami of Deaf Pride, a tsunami of Deaf Oppression and Trustees of Tsunamis

Today’s rally at the U.S. Capitol:

The earliest I could come to the rally was when the march to the Capitol arrived at 1st street/Constitution ave NW.  I saw a TV helicopter hovering above, and trying to capture it while shooting a picture of the first marchers– it was a miserable attempt so I gave up on this idea quickly, put my camera in my pocket and immediately joined the marchers.

About 3,000 strong and it was growing.  5 blocks back were still more marchers. My Deaf Gallaudet pride burst out 100 buttons on my shirt.

First up was the Hunger Strike 8 folks in Sean Markel’s truck, resting. They deserved the front-ride.

Right behind Sean’s truck, and rightfully in the front of 3,000 others- the student, faculty and alumni leaders joined their elbows in solidarity.  JKF resign! JKF resign! was the main motto of signing marchers.

I was counting on only one hour of participation- I have to go to my last son’s 5th birthday party, 25 kids were expecting me to show up (I should add- demanding). I end up staying for 2.5 hours under beautiful cloudless sky (like it was when it was DPN1).  I hit the gas and made it to my son’s birthday party with minutes to spare.

DPN 1 march to the capitol paled in comparison in numbers.  If we thought it was really important to have a deaf president back then, it was more important to have a better president who wouldn’t divide up the community and manage by intimidation.

Having a deaf president isn’t enough.  Having one who cares about the Deaf community, who is proactive (not reactive) about racism and audism, who unifies the community instead of dividing it up, were more important than having a deaf president.

A tsunami of Deaf Pride came into my mind.  I thought I’d drown, but I was able to swim like a Deaf Olympic swimmer and made it to the hills of Deafhood for safety.

Finding out about Ken Levinson’s comments–  ”I thought deaf sign language users are dumb, but I found out they are not”– really simmered me.  We not only have problems with Gallaudet’s President, but we also have attitudinal problems with Galladuet’s Board of Trustees who think sign language users are dumb, but oh they are not.  Now, thats a tsunami of oppression!  We now have one additional level of administration to deal with in terms of accepting what IKJordan said- Deaf people can do anything but hear.

This is why we need 67% of Trustees being a Gallaudet alumni and the Board Chair to be a Gallaudet alumni.  At that point, we can ensure the Trustees behave in the best interests of Gallaudet Faculty, Staff, Students and Alumnis, Deafhood and the use of American Sign Language.  Until then, we have Trustees of Tsunamis.

Not In My Front Yard! Exclaimed Jordan

For now, the name of the grassy area slipped Is that the name for that grassy area between College Hall and The President’s personal residence. My brain is still fried from the exciting day yesterday.

Earlier last week, a large tent was being constructed on this grassy field. Jordan was upset about it and ordered this large structure, still in the process of being completed, be bull-razed. The GUAA president, Andy Lange tried in vain to resolve this with Jordan.

He spoke briefly on this tent fiasco at the rally at Capitol yesterday morning. Jordan was visibly upset and told him the tent cannot be built in front of his front yard.

Not In His Front Yard?

Immediately after his presentation, I asked Andy if true biz Jordan said that. I wanted to ensure that I saw (not heard) correctly what he said. He replied affirmatively, Jordan did use these words.

When I went by the grassy field, there were no tent.

The grassy area is now his front yard. I thought that belongs to the whole Gallaudet University.

BOT’s Remarks in Poor Taste

 Sat, 21 Oct 2006 17:23:52 -0400

It was recently revealed during a press conference that one of the Board
members of Gallaudet University, Ken Levingston—in a meeting with
other people made the following comment: “I always thought that deaf
people who sign are stupid.”

Not all professors at Gallaudet University sign at a level equal to
expectations of academic excellence.

Not all meetings at Gallaudet University are accessible in terms of
communication.

Not all officers of the Department of Public Safety at Gallaudet
University sign well enough to communicate, let alone conduct an
investigation.

Not all of the Board members of Gallaudet University can sign.

Those are just some of the examples of Audism on campus. There are many,
many more instances, ranging from the obvious to the subtle.

The word “Audism” was coined by one of the Board members of
Gallaudet University, Tom Humphries—in 1975.

Dr. Fernandes has repeatedly spread propaganda that this protest is
about her “not being deaf enough.” Furthermore, she has made some
disturbing observations about “a new world order.”

Is audism acceptable? Is it something we deserve to endure, to tolerate?
Or should we be outraged when comments are made by our very own board
members that display a level of idiocy so staggering that we have to
question his ability to think in a deep, insightful manner?

One would think that of all people, the man who coined the word would
not only understand the concept of Audism, but also know the deep level
of damage that the practice of such paternalistic oppression does to us
as a community.

So where are you in all of this, Tom?
