No Events Drawing Large Numbers, Said Jordan
“We cannot have events that will draw large numbers
of people. Under the present circumstances it simply is not a safe or
prudent thing to do.”
Commentary: Not safe? Can anyone tell me why a large group of proud alumni on campus to celebrate homecoming, a highly treasured annual event, with the students is not safe? Am I missing anything?
The last time I heard, most of the gates are open. If memory serves me right, most of the gates were closed during homecoming weekend, anyway. Why isn’t Jordan willing to work with the protesters to set up teams to open the gates during an emergency rather than go on it heavy handed by ‘postponing’ the homecoming events?
It looks to me another attempt to suppress and silence the opposition from people who disagrees with the appointment of Fernandes as the next president by ejecting them from the campus. Does anyone feel this way? elizabeth

Subject: Postponement of Homecoming
Importance: High
October 19, 2006
To Members of the Campus Community:
I know that we are all disappointed about the postponement of
Homecoming. It was a difficult decision to make, but necessary under the
circumstances. Currently there is just one gate that provides access to
campus, the Sixth Street gate. Those of you who have used it to enter
campus have found the going slow and frustrating. The long lines and
wait time for people leaving campus in the afternoon have been even
worse. The Brentwood Parkway gate near MSSD and the West Virginia Avenue
gate near Kendall School are locked, closed and barricaded with tents
and debris. We have made repeated requests to the protestors to open
these gates and each request has been refused.
Given this very limited access to campus, I simply cannot invite
hundreds and possibly thousands of people to come to our campus for
Homecoming. In the past, when Homecoming events took place, we opened as
many gates as were needed to allow traffic to flow smoothly. Even with
all the gates open past Homecomings have created a logistical problem
with traffic. With only one open gate, it would be impossible to assure
that emergency vehicles, such as ambulances or fire trucks could quickly
enter campus and respond as needed. We have already had incidents where
emergency vehicles have encountered difficulty accessing the campus.
Homecoming is an important tradition at Gallaudet and by continuing to
barricade all but one gate, the protesters are responsible for the
disruption of this year’s events. That is why there will be no
official Gallaudet University sanctioned Homecoming this weekend. All
official Homecoming events are postponed and will be rescheduled. For
safety’s sake there can be no large scale events that draw large numbers
of people, such as the football game or open events scheduled in
auditoriums or large meeting rooms.
We are aware that there are small scale events that have been scheduled
independently of official, University sponsored, events. We will attempt
to cooperate with those individuals who are already on campus and have
already reserved rooms and arranged for catering. We will try to work
with those who have planned events such as class reunions that have
limited attendance. We cannot have events that will draw large numbers
of people. Under the present circumstances it simply is not a safe or
prudent thing to do.
I ask that you join me in working to restore our sense of community and
mutual caring.
I. King Jordan
President

Jordan’s decision makes sense in light of the heated debate over Fernandes and the protesters and augmented supporters, as in the alumni, and Gallaudet’s liability if anything happened. Jordan may also be trying to defuse a powder keg in advance. I can’t blame him in that situation.
I agree with Elizabeth. What’s the issue here? People want to go to class reunions, to socialize, etc.
Is IKJ insane? That is because faithfully I have been attending Gally homecoming event every year since 1978 where all the Kendall, MSSD and 6th ave gates were always closed except for only front gate. It is hard to believe that IKJ can do anything and can say is not true whatever he wants. It is real sad to learn about him revealing evil.
Cynical, the alumni are peaceful. The students are peaceful.
Who are igniting the powder keg here?
i believe this was abig error on his part. He SHOULD have reached out to the studetns to make a compromise. I do feel the students would ahve been willing to open up the gates for that.
Yeah I saw IKJ in the DeafNations interview this week, what a very cold guy!
JK is forced(by BOT?) to take care of the IKJ’s business when she takes the office to avoid the serious investigations such as missing funds?
I agree with #5. The students might have been willing to consider opening the front gate for Homecoming. Even if not, emergency access would not be an issue. Witness last Sunday’s fire call for smoke in Fowler Hall. Students cleared the front gate way in advance of the arrival of 9 fire trucks and did not impede their access at all. I know…I was there.
Roger, naturally. The students will not block the gates in case of emergencies. They really care about Gallaudet community.
Mishka…. you say students will not block the gates in case of emergencies? (#8) Here is a real situation reported on Wednesday, Oct 17 at MSSD, which could have ended much more dangerously:
“…. Unfortunately, the MSSD gate continues to be blocked and, as a result, last night was challenging for several MSSD students. Four MSSD students were stuck in a dorm elevator. Emergency vehicles were called to assist with this situation and arrived to the Brentwood gate. The vehicle was not permitted to enter. After some time, a protest leader arrived at the scene and told the others to allow the vehicle through. In addition, cinder blocks had been placed along the road, preventing vehicular traffic from entering the drive toward MSSD, limiting access even when coming from the 6th St. entrance. Fortunately, no one was hurt. However, this situation raises concerns as in a medical or fire related emergency, every minute is critical….”
MOST gates are not open – ONE gate is open
on the weekends there is only one gate open (the main gate) – EXCEPT in case of emergency AND/OR heavy flow of traffic (which is true anytime there is a lot of traffic-like for sports games and other events). With so much stuff and people in front of the gates its impractical to expect the gates to be cleared quickly if they are needed, especially since the protesters have refused to open gates/roadways before.
There was a request to open the gates earlier in the week and a deadline was set. When that request wasn’t made IKJ postponed activities. If the gates had been cleared as asked (Brentwood and West Virginia) Homecoming would probably be happening this weekend. Too bad they didn’t want to cooperate. again.
Anonymous, so it was ok during DPN in 1988, but not okay during the Unity for Gallaudet in 2006? I sense double standards here.
For your information, the gates have always been closed except for one gate during the homecoming weekend for many years. It would be no different this year.
Hmm… in my days… often time the front gate is always open… other gates closed at night- depends on MSSD/Kendall schedules… hmm…
