Back Up Candidate Ready To Replace Fernandes
Commentary: This practice violates one of the two FSSA demands. The BoT and Jordan continue to disregard the opinions of Gallaudet Community, not following up their own promises last May that there would be teamwork between all the entities. elizabeth

This morning’s front page article in the Washington Post was read with great interest by many protesters. Dr. Fernandes’ emails to the Board members can be viewed as coercive. This management by intimidation style is something students, faculty and staff at Gallaudet University are well accustomed to.
However, the Washington Post article also says according to sources, “her opponents have lined up a candidate they say they hope will take her place.” This comment stuns us. The FSSA Coalition and others on campus have worked diligently to promote our mission of the importance of fairness, equity and transparency in the presidential search process. We continue to hold that belief in high importance. We do not have a candidate in mind to replace Dr. Fernandes as the president of Gallaudet University. We do, however, recognize that there are a number of highly qualified deaf individuals who could lead this university through this current crisis.
The administration has said repeatedly that there are few deaf individuals qualified to lead Gallaudet University and we strongly object to this characterization of our community leaders.

I’m not surprised that the students and faculty have settled on their “ideal” president. It’s really too bad that they didn’t get their act together on this issue several months ago instead of sitting down with their thumbs up their asses.
Their problems lie with not having a set agenda for their protest. At this point trhey must allow JKF to be Pres and let her do the job she was appointed to.
Only after given a chance can they cry.
Cynical,
I am not sure what you are trying to say. The commentary said very clearly “We do not have a candidate in mind to replace Dr. Fernandes as the president of Gallaudet University. We do, however, recognize that there are a number of highly qualified deaf individuals who could lead this university through this current crisis.”
That means that the comment is WRONG. THERE IS NO backup candidate AT ALL!
If the Washington Post information about the backup candidate is even at all true, it likely does not apply to the students and faculty. Look at the context:
Note that this information was in a paragraph talking about trustees. It looks like the “opponents” are trustees. After all, the headline of this article was “Gallaudet Trustees Split on Fernandes”.
You say: The administration has said repeatedly that there are few deaf individuals qualified to lead Gallaudet University and we strongly object to this characterization of our community leaders.
I think you are splitting hairs here. Gallaudet has 15,000 alumni if GUAA reports are accurate. Assuming that 25 of them have a PhD and university administrative experience, that IS few and not a negative characterization.
who is this backup that is being claimed?? please enlight us… I haven’t heard a thing… Stop making up stuff JKF and IKJ gosh you accuse us Deaf students, faculty, staff, alumni and communities being childish what you are doing is exactly a 15 year old do in HIGH SCHOOL!!! GROW UP IKJ AND JFK BOTH OF YOU. PH.D LEVEL MY BUTT YOU DON’T EVEN DESERVE THE TITLE ANYMORE.
Washington Post is a quasi-tabloid.
The faculty is using the student protesters like pawns in a chess game and they have no idea they are being played. The FSSA has got a whole different agenda than the one they are throwing out.
When this is all said and done and if JKF does not assume the presidency, the students are going to left with pie on their face while the faculty grins at how they got them to do their dirty work.
Wake up students, your time is running out! You are being played by the FSSA!!
If the Washington Post article was accurate, how dare the FSSA think they can choose their ideal candidate??? I bet that their ideal candidate is DOD and Deafhoodist!!! The Gally protest is a DOD protest. I know the truth because nobody can fool me easy.
Right on! FSSA is playing a game which drags Gallaudet into dark days.
fgawi, you are saying that the students aren’t capable of forming their own thoughts? This statement is very patronizing as they are university students. However, you fail to understand that many alumni and staff support the protest, not just the faculty and the students.
Perhaps you should open your eyes and really check into the climate of Gallaudet the last ten years or so. It is easy to be misled when one doesn’t have the full information
The idea that FSSA has a candidate lined up is straight from JKF. I have been around FSSA and talked with their leaders on a number of occasions, and not once have I heard them say they have a candidate lined up. This is just flat out made up.
