Gallaudet Protest Continues but University Expected to Open
WASHINGTON (AP) – The protesters remain at the main entrance of Gallaudet University Monday morning, but protest leaders say they’ll allow the classes and other university activities to resume this week.
The protesters are still calling for the resignation of incoming president Jane Fernandes. Some have also demanded that I. King Jordan step down as president now. Jordan who has served since 1988, is due to retire in January.
More than 100 students were arrested on Friday when campus security officers moved to reopen the university’s Sixth Street gate. The arrests came after several warnings.
This is Homecoming week at Gallaudet. Alumnae and others with an interests in the university have already started arriving. Protesters are hoping they’ll join in calls for Fernandes’ resignation.
