Ex Protest Leader Starts Hunger Strike
Friends all over -
After the arrests of my beloved friends last night and not being able to do the same because of my Canadian citizenship and the threat of deportation, I have decided to take further measures to prove my loyalty to Gallaudet University and its protestors.
As of 3am this morning, I am officially on a hunger strike.
I join 3 other students in a canopy with heat, sleeping bags and drinks and will stay there without food until Jane K. Fernandes resigns. It is a bold move for the democracy of Gallaudet, but fear none. I am a healthy human being and as much as I love food I believe in this cause and believe that once Congress and the media get wind of this ongoing hunger strike, they will put more pressure on Jane to resign.
Please support my move to abstain from solid food and believe in the cause that we are protesting for. We protest for better leadership, quality education, faculty governance, system change and most especially social justice.
Wish me luck.
With good tidings I send you from 45 degree weather -

Pleas4e, this is not for negative comments. I am not in support of the illegal actions of the protestors, but hunger strike is not illegal. Leave them alone, letthem voice their opinions. We can voice our own without mockery and negativism.
My heart goes to the Canadian.

I would like to report on your hunger strike in Deafweekly. Whereabouts in Canada are you? Are all four of you on a hunger strike or just you? What is your last name? Please let me know at mail@deafweekly.com. Thanks!
On a hunger strike? Uhm…rather drastic step, no? Does the administration know who you are on a personal level? If not, do you think they would care if you are on a hunger strike?
If I were you, I would think twice if not thrice over about your hunger strike. Going on a hunger strike could be construde as suicidel. That of course would be to the extreme thought. However, if I were you, I would look it up in the school’s manual to see whether or not Gallaudet can expell a student if they even suspect they are suicidal. They may use this, in a legal sense, to expel you.
We have tried different ways just to get them to realize that JK needs to step aside before we all, regardless of which camp we are in, can begin the healing process. At this point, where they are still ridiciously determined to stand firm, bold moves need to happen. I applaud you for the courage to go on hunger strike. Be sure to meditate/pray for the strength and wisdom.
Friend
Since you are a foreign student on a visa, our US government and US Taxpayers will not stand behind you with this injstice behavior. We do not want any “suicidal” act from from foriegn country on our US soil. It will backfire you and you will immediately be deported. This irrational act will consider as a suicide as equal as “suicide bomber” by the insurgents in Iraq and other places in the world in our cultural war. This is not the way FSSA and GUAA want to go.
It will may get the media attention yes, but they are not interested since there are more serious issues happening in our whole world. This is a post 9/11 era with North Korea threats. This is not 1988 anymore. It will only put in a couple lines in the newspaper and then they will find you and depart you back to Canada. I truly think your Canadian government will not approve this as well.
This act will not only degrade yourself but the whole purpose of the protest. Think about this. FSSA and GUAA will be accountable for promoting this act and it has nothing to do with IKJ or JF because this irrational behavior is your choice only. The irrational act of hunger strike is out of desperatation and suicidal.
I have been a full supporter until this act.. I will cease my support for this protest until this hunger strike ends!
I am a proud Gallaudetian (Class of 89), A DPNer, strong Deaf person who is a proud ASL user. I am all for demcracy.
Please reconsider your Hunger strke act as it severs no justifications whereas you are just only degradeing yourself more through the oppression. There other ways to “skin the cats”.
I had to delete three posts in this entry. Please be civil and refrain from personal insults!
Quite a nice standard you are upholding here, Mishka.
Hunger strikes does NOT work.
I think that you all should stop bitching and/or complaining over every little thing that goes on. I have researched the consistency of protest at the university and I have observed that one occures every four months. Please stop pissing your pants over every little thing. Oh and hunger stikes only serve one purpose: to bring attention to yourself. Attention you may want but you are getting it from hearing people that you want “social justice” from. I am from a family full of disabled members from the deaf to the blind. They wake up everyday and thank God for thier time on earth. One thing I have learned in life: If you are bitching, then you are unhappy; and if you bitch all the time, then you will be unhappy all the time.
Don’t try to make people feel sorry for you because you can go without eating solid food for a few weeks. If you are going to spend every waking hour doing something, then do something WORTH doing! Help your community! Volunteer at an animal shelter. SOME THINGS ARE WORTH DOING SOMETHING OVER!
