Fox5 Blog On Gallaudet Protest
Here is your chance to educate the public the real issues behind Gallaudet Protest. Too many people in the Metro DC area still think it is all about ‘Not Deaf Enough’. It is all about a flawed presidential candidate procedure and ineffectual leadership of the Fernandes. Fernandes have earned two no-confidence votes by the University Faculty Senate the last six years. The majority of the faculty members have requested this morning for Fernandes to resign. 80% of the students are against the appointment of Fernandes.
Be sure to tell them how Gallaudet Officials try to restrict the students’ expressions, the mistreatment of the students by the security guards who don’t know sign language well, and the ban on the staff interpreters to prevent the students from talking freely with the reporters covering the protest. elizabeth

Students have been protesting at Gallaudet University for days. They are unhappy that leadership is supporting the incoming president. The students at the only liberal arts institution dedicated to the education of the deaf and hard of hearing, have said that Jane Fernandes does not have the leadership skills needed to guide the institution because she was not born deaf. They also say she is the wrong person to serve as a spokeswoman for Gallaudet, which is viewed as a major center for deaf culture around the world. The university supports Fernandes.
How do you think this issue is being handled by both sides?
Where Were The Interpreters?
What were these officers thinking when they communicated with the students orally, perfectly aware that they were dealing with deaf students? Why hadn’t the D.C. Police Dept provide interpreters for the officers? Had they done this, these students wouldn’t have been injured. elizabeth
This second gate was where two students recently got assaulted by the police. The DC police. A female student was just standing there, blocking the police’s way. They told her to move, and she just turned around so her back was facing the police. A policeman came up to her and twisted her neck and stomped on her foot, hard. She fell down and scrapped her knees. Another student was also assaulted – his neck was grabbed by a policeman.
Tell Everyone To Come To Gallaudet.
Tell everyone to come to Gallaudet. We need numbers to show that we
mean business. Okay! Tent cities are great but they are not helping us
much.

Gallaudet Students Blockade Campus
By BRIAN WESTLEY, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON – Gallaudet University students blocked access to campus for a second day Thursday, escalating their protest against an incoming president they say lacks the skills to lead the nation’s only liberal arts university for the deaf and hearing impaired.
Update: 4:16 PM
They are trying to bit by bit take back control

I had a nice talk to one of dps officers. He said sorry they have to do
their job but yes they re doing that as one of the plans to have campus
open tmw.
Bottom line: we remain with campus lockdown til jane resigns.
This is the big picture.
Bottom line: hmb was our safe zone. Now our safe zone is the front
gate.
They need to respect and understand our fear by their ongoing
intimidation tactics. We remain in fear and we remain steadfast in this
resolution: jane must resign. If she cares about gallaudet.

Update 4:10 PM
I am at the front gate. There’s a guy beating a huge drum *bam bam bam* to get students over to 6th gate since there r cops over there too.
Across Fla Ave there are 30 DC police even with horses waiting. Right now there is sheer fear plastered on everyone’s faces. Its truly horrifying but at the same time inspiring. They want to remain. They’re not running scared. Many os us are wearing Unity for Gallaudet tshirts.
Holcomb, Commerson, Plummer and Beckman are meeting with King Jordan along with lawyers Jeff Rosen and Mark Goldstone.
3: 57 PM Update
I am here now. I wud say 400 people here. DPS has sieged the building. We are frantically paging alumni to come. Many of us have a bad feeling about this. We were told special ops police is here to look at the situation. There is a much more heightened sense of fear here. It just adiates from everyone. I’m crying right now because I care so much for the protestors and the deaf community. I’m lost and confused…
